Booking choice: The luxury dinner cruise, 2 hours. Book this Tour details
The Royal Barge Procession is one of the rarest sights in Bangkok. It is staged only for major royal occasions, and 2026 is one of them: the procession carries the Royal Kathin offering to Wat Arun on 6 November, as part of the celebrations for Queen Suthida's fourth-cycle birthday.
The Royal Thai Navy has been rehearsing since August. Two full-dress rehearsals remain, and both are free to watch from the riverbanks. They also change how the river works on those afternoons, which is why it matters if you have a dinner cruise booked.
The quick answer
The procession is on 6 November 2026, from Wasukri Pier to Wat Arun. Full-dress rehearsals are on Wednesday 21 and Wednesday 28 October, starting around 14:30, with a minor rehearsal on 15 October. Watch from either bank between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun. River boats are restricted on those afternoons, so check your cruise with the operator.
When is the Royal Barge Procession 2026, and when are the rehearsals?
The procession is on Friday 6 November 2026. The full-dress rehearsals are on Wednesday 21 and Wednesday 28 October, each starting at about 14:30.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand's event page lists ten minor rehearsals from August to mid October and two full-dress rehearsals, and says each "is expected to begin at approximately 14.30 Hrs." TAT had not published a start time for the procession itself when we wrote this. The government's public relations department gives the same rehearsal dates.
The full-dress rehearsals are the ones to aim for if you cannot be in town on 6 November. The crews wear the ceremonial uniforms, and the formation is the real one.
| Date | What happens | Start |
|---|---|---|
| 17 August to 8 October | Nine minor rehearsals (already held) | About 14:30 |
| Thursday 15 October | Last minor rehearsal | About 14:30 |
| Wednesday 21 October | First full-dress rehearsal | About 14:30 |
| Wednesday 28 October | Second full-dress rehearsal | About 14:30 |
| Friday 6 November | Royal Barge Procession to Wat Arun | Not yet published |
What route does the Royal Barge Procession take?
From Wasukri Pier down the Chao Phraya, past the Grand Palace, to Wat Arun. Fifty-two barges take part, in a formation more than a kilometre long.
According to TAT, the barges leave Wasukri Pier and pass Phra Sumen Fort, Somdet Phra Pinklao Bridge, Siriraj Hospital, the Grand Palace and the Royal Thai Navy Auditorium before arriving at Wat Arun. The 52 barges are crewed by 2,200 Royal Thai Navy personnel, arranged in five columns.
TAT puts the formation at about 1,280 metres long and 90 metres wide. That is a long line of boats to pass any one point, so a single good spot on the bank is enough.

Where can you watch the Royal Barge Procession for free?
From either bank of the Chao Phraya between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun. No ticketed stands have been announced for the public.
TAT's news release points visitors to "viewing areas along both banks of the Chao Phraya River between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun Ratchawararam". The Phra Nakhon side near the Grand Palace and the Thonburi side near Wat Arun both face the route, and riverside cafes on either bank fill early.
Our advice: get there well before 14:30, bring water and a hat, and dress as you would for a temple, with shoulders and knees covered. It is a royal and religious occasion. If you want the procession and the temples in one day, the evening temple tour visits Wat Arun and Wat Pho before closing, though on a rehearsal day the river crossing may be affected.
Will Chao Phraya boats run on rehearsal days?
Not on the central stretch in the afternoon. On earlier rehearsal days, all vessels were kept out of the route from midday, and express boats ran shortened routes.
For the August rehearsals the Marine Department ordered all vessels off the stretch from Krung Thon Bridge to Phra Pok Klao Bridge from 12:30 "until the rehearsal has finished", Nation Thailand reported. On 20 August, Chao Phraya Express Boat, Chao Phraya Tourist Boat and Supatra Boat ran a revised timetable from noon between Krung Thon Bridge Pier and Memorial Bridge Pier, according to a second Nation report.
The Thaiger reports that on rehearsal days express and electric boats stop short of the zone, Tha Chang and Tha Maharaj piers close during those hours, and that visitors heading to Wat Arun, the Grand Palace or Wat Pho should travel by road or MRT. The October notices may differ, so check on the day.
| On a rehearsal afternoon | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Central river stretch | All vessels kept out from about midday until the rehearsal ends |
| Express and tourist boats | Revised or shortened routes from noon |
| Tha Chang and Tha Maharaj piers | Closed during the restricted hours |
| Getting to Wat Arun or Wat Pho | Go by road or MRT (Sanam Chai station) |
| Evening dinner cruises | No official notice found; ask the operator |
Does the Royal Barge Procession affect dinner cruises?
Possibly, on 21 October, 28 October and 6 November. Operators may change routes or times, so message yours a few days before.
The rehearsals start mid afternoon and evening cruises leave much later: the luxury dinner cruise sails 8 to 10 p.m. and the Super Galaxy 8 to 10.30 p.m. from ICONSIAM Pier 4. On paper they do not overlap. We found no official end time for the rehearsals and no notice about dinner cruises, so treat it as a question to ask, not a given.
October also brings high water. The luxury cruise listing says the boat may skip Memorial Bridge when the river is high, and the White Orchid listing says the itinerary can change with water levels, with no refund in that case. Send a message through your GetYourGuide booking and ask whether the route or check-in time changes on your date.

Luxury Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise
Two hours past the floodlit Grand Palace and Wat Arun, with a buffet, live music and Thai dance. Each booking gets its own table.
Book this Tour detailsWhich night should I book a dinner cruise that week?
Any night except the three ceremony days, if you want zero risk of changes. If you are only in town on one of them, book the late sailing and confirm with the operator.
We would pick a date away from 21 October, 28 October and 6 November and spend one of those afternoons on the riverbank instead. You get the barges in daylight and the lit temples from the water on another night. Sunset sailings are the ones we would avoid on rehearsal days.
All three cruises on this site cancel for free up to 24 hours before departure, which helps if a notice comes out late. The dinner cruise guide compares the boats, piers and drinks, and TAT answers event questions on its contact centre line, 1672.
A brand-new three-deck boat from ICONSIAM, 8 to 10.30 p.m., with buffet and shows.
