Thailand's meteorologists split the year into three seasons: a hot season from mid-February to mid-May, a rainy season from mid-May to mid-October, and a cool season from mid-October to mid-February, per the Thai government. In Bangkok, cool is relative. It just means less sticky.
For night tours the season matters less than you might think. Tours run in the rain, the boats have indoor decks, and sunset moves by barely an hour across the year. But some months are more comfortable than others, and a few dates change the city completely.
The quick answer
November to February is the best time: the coolest, driest evenings, with December the coolest month. March to May is hot, April the hottest. Mid-May to mid-October is the rainy season, with September and October the wettest. Haze can spike from November to March. Night tours run through the year.
What is the best month to go to Bangkok?
December, then January. The cool season from November to February brings the lowest humidity and the most comfortable evenings.
December is Bangkok's coolest month, with average lows around 22°C, per Weather Spark's climate data. The rains are over, the evenings are dry, and you can walk a food tour without wilting. January is nearly as good, and February starts to warm up.
The catch is everyone else knows it. The cool months are the busiest for visitors, and the best tours fill up. Book ahead and use the free cancellation if plans change. The other catch is haze: more on that below.
A dry December night is made for the open top deck: two hours on the river, 8 to 10 p.m.
Book thisWhat are Bangkok's seasons like at night?
Cool and dry from November to February, hot and humid from March to mid-May, rainy from mid-May to mid-October.
Here is how each stretch of the year plays out for an evening out.
| Months | Season | Evenings | For night tours |
|---|---|---|---|
| November to February | Cool season | Dry, the least humid | The best time; book ahead |
| March to mid-May | Hot season | Hot and sticky; April the hottest | Go after sunset, carry water |
| Mid-May to August | Rainy season | Showers, often heavy and short | Tours run; bring an umbrella |
| September and October | Rainy season, wettest | Heavy downpours on many evenings | Expect wet streets and high water |
The official cool season starts in mid-October, but October is still one of the wettest months. In practice, think of November as the start.

What is the coldest month in Bangkok?
December. Average lows sit around 22°C, which is cool for Bangkok and warm for almost anyone else.
Do not pack a jacket. A December evening in Bangkok is a pleasant T-shirt night; the cold you will feel is the air conditioning in malls, cinemas and the BTS. A light layer helps there, and on a dinner boat's indoor deck.
The hottest month is April, with average highs near 35°C. Evenings stay warm and humid, and a three-hour food walk feels longer. Start late, after sunset, and drink water between tastings.
When is the worst time to visit Bangkok?
For night tours, September and October are the wettest and April is the hottest. They are not bad months, just wetter or hotter.
Weather Spark puts September as Bangkok's wettest month, followed by October. Evening storms are common in those months, streets flood briefly, and the river runs high. Tours still run. Expect some wet feet and the odd change of route on the river.
April has the heat and Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, on 13 to 15 April. If you love it, it is the best party of the year; if you want a quiet food tour, the old town and Silom turn into a water fight, and getting around is slow.

What are rainy season evenings like on a night tour?
Wet, warm and still worth it. The tuk tuks have covers, the flagship operator hands out ponchos, and the cruise boats move open-deck guests inside.
Rain changes the night, but it rarely stops it. On the flagship tuk tuk tour, the operator provides ponchos and umbrellas. The backstreets food walk asks you to bring an umbrella. On the river, the luxury dinner cruise runs as normal, moves rooftop guests indoors and hands out umbrellas; the Super Galaxy does the same.
High water is the bigger effect late in the season. The luxury cruise warns that it may avoid Memorial Bridge when the river is high, and the White Orchid says water levels can change its route. On the plus side, the rainy months are quieter, and the air after a storm is the clearest of the year.

Luxury Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise
Rain does not cancel it: rooftop guests move to the air-conditioned decks, and the boat sails on past the lit temples.
Book this Tour detailsWhen is the haze worst in Bangkok?
Roughly November to March, the same months as the best weather. Some days are clear, some are grey. Check the readings on the Air4Thai app.
Fine-dust pollution, PM2.5, builds up in the dry season. The Pollution Control Department tracks it from November to early March. In the 2025-26 season, Bangkok's air was over the national standard on 29 days, far fewer than the year before, according to Khaosod English. It can still spike.
If a hazy evening comes up, it is a better night for a food walk under the stalls than for a rooftop view. People with asthma should check the readings each day, using the Air4Thai or AirBKK apps.
Which festivals change Bangkok at night?
Loy Krathong in late November, the Royal Barge Procession on 6 November 2026, Songkran in April, and Chinese New Year in Yaowarat.
- Loy Krathong: on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, which falls in late November in 2026. People float candle-lit baskets on the river and the canals. Check the confirmed date with Tourism Thailand nearer the time.
- Royal Barge Procession: 6 November 2026, to Wat Arun, with rehearsals on 21 and 28 October from about 2.30 p.m., per Tourism Thailand. River traffic is disrupted on those days; see the Royal Barge post.
- Songkran: 13 to 15 April, the Thai New Year, with water fights on Khao San Road and Silom.
- Chinese New Year: late January or February. Yaowarat fills with lanterns, lion dances and crowds, and some family stalls close for a few days.
- Buddhist holy days: alcohol sales stop for 24 hours outside licensed venues. Worth knowing before a pub crawl.

The classic first night, in any season: the flower market, Wat Prayoon lit up and Chinatown, two to a tuk tuk.
Book thisWhat time does it get dark in Bangkok?
Between about 5.45 and 6.50 p.m. The earliest sunset is in late November, the latest in early July.
Bangkok is close enough to the equator that the day length barely moves. Weather Spark gives the earliest sunset at 5.47 p.m. around 21 November and the latest at 6.50 p.m. around 10 July. Night tours start around sunset all year.
That makes the temple hours the same headache in every month. Wat Pho closes at 6.30 p.m. and Wat Arun around 5.30 to 6 p.m., so in December the gates shut close to sunset and in July just before it. If you want to go inside and stay for the lights, the evening temple tour is timed for it. One more timing tip: Mondays are quiet in Chinatown, with some stalls closed and the Michelin tuk tuk tour not running.
Frequently asked questions
Is October a good time to visit Bangkok?
It is the end of the rainy season and still one of the wettest months, so expect evening storms. In 2026, the Royal Barge rehearsals on 21 and 28 October also disrupt the river. November is the safer bet.
Is it worth visiting Bangkok in the rainy season?
Yes, if you can live with an umbrella. The storms are often heavy and short, the city is quieter, and night tours and dinner cruises run in the rain.
When is Loy Krathong in 2026?
On the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month, which falls in late November in 2026. Tourism Thailand publishes the confirmed date and events closer to the time.
What is the hottest month in Bangkok?
April, with average highs near 35°C. Go out after sunset, and plan the hottest part of the day indoors.
