Booking choice: The midnight food tour, 4 hours. Book this Tour details
Plenty of people get one night in Bangkok: a stopover, a late arrival before an island flight, a gap between two trips. It is worth leaving the hotel for. In four hours you can eat across Chinatown, see the flower market and Wat Arun lit up, and be back before midnight.
What you cannot do is everything. The Grand Palace sells its last ticket at 3.30 p.m., the airport is a long way out, and Bangkok's traffic decides how much of your evening you spend in a taxi. Plan around those three and the night works.
The quick answer
Yes, one night is worth it if you plan one evening, not the city. Stay near a BTS or MRT station, take the Airport Rail Link into town, and book a tour that starts nearby or brings you back: the midnight food tour ends at your hotel. Skip the Grand Palace unless you land before mid-afternoon.

Is it worth spending a night in Bangkok?
Yes. One evening gets you Chinatown, the river and a lit temple. It does not get you the Grand Palace or the big temples inside, which close in the afternoon.
A night in Bangkok beats a night in an airport hotel, as long as you leave the hotel. Evenings are the best time of day here anyway: the heat drops, the street food comes out and the temples are floodlit.
The time pressure is real. Count back from your bed: if you land in the afternoon and clear immigration by 5 p.m., you have the whole evening. Land at 9 p.m. and you have a late supper and a walk. Either way, choose one area and one plan, and do not try to cross the city twice.
How long does it take to get from the airport to the city?
From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link takes 27 minutes to Phaya Thai and runs from 5.30 a.m. to midnight. A taxi depends on traffic.
Suvarnabhumi is about 25 km from downtown, per its Wikipedia entry. The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai in 27 minutes, with a change to the BTS there and to the MRT at Makkasan for Phetchaburi station. Thairath reported in July 2026 that it runs daily from 5.30 a.m. to midnight. At rush hour the train beats the road easily.
A taxi or app car is simpler with bags and after midnight, but traffic makes the time unpredictable. Don Mueang, the low-cost airport, is north of the centre; plan on a taxi or the SRT Red Line.
Before you fly, fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. It is free, and you can submit it up to three days before arrival, per the UK travel advice. Visa-exempt stays were cut to 30 days from 15 September 2026: see the visa post.
Where should you stay for one night?
Near a BTS or MRT station on the line you need. Silom or Sukhumvit for transport and food, the riverside for a cruise, Phaya Thai or Makkasan for an early train back.
- Silom: on both the BTS and the MRT, with street food and rooftops. Easy for Chinatown by MRT and for the river by BTS.
- Sukhumvit: the BTS runs the length of it, with plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars. Good if you want a night out after dinner.
- The riverside: close to the piers if a dinner cruise is your one evening, and the view is the best in town.
- Phaya Thai or Makkasan: on the Airport Rail Link, for a very early flight.
- The old town: close to the temples, quiet at night, far from the trains. Better for a longer stay.
If you book the midnight food tour, any hotel in central Bangkok works: it lists a drop-off at your hotel at the end.

Staying by the river? Two hours on the water, 8 to 10 p.m., with a buffet and Thai dance.
Book thisWhat is the best plan for one night in Bangkok?
Shower, catch the sunset from the river or a rooftop, then do one tour. Pick food by tuk tuk, a dinner cruise, or the classic tuk tuk loop.
Three ways to spend the evening, depending on what you want from it.
| Plan | What you do | Ends | Book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food first | Ten or more tastings by tuk tuk, the flower market and a rooftop drink facing Wat Arun | Just before midnight, at your hotel | Midnight food tour |
| The river | A buffet, Thai dance and the floodlit temples from the water | About 10 p.m. at the pier | Luxury dinner cruise |
| The classic | A market, the lit grounds of Wat Prayoon, the flower market and dessert in Chinatown | Chinatown, after 2 to 4 hours | Tuk tuk night tour |
Our pick for a one-night stop is the midnight food tour. It meets at Sam Yan MRT, exit 2, one stop from Silom on the MRT, covers food, the flower market and a view of Wat Arun in four hours, and solves the ride home. The flagship tuk tuk tour suits an earlier start: its operator gives start times around 6 p.m., which leaves time for a drink afterwards.

Midnight Food Tour by Tuk Tuk
Four hours, ten or more tastings and a rooftop drink facing Wat Arun, then a tuk tuk back to your hotel.
Book this Tour detailsCan you see the temples on a one-night stop?
From outside, unless you land early. Wat Pho closes at 6.30 p.m. and Wat Arun around 5.30 to 6 p.m.; the Grand Palace stops selling tickets at 3.30 p.m.
The hours come from Tourism Thailand. If you are in town by mid-afternoon, the evening temple tour meets at Tha Tien pier, goes inside Wat Pho and Wat Arun before closing, and finishes in Chinatown after dark. It does not include food, so plan dinner on Yaowarat afterwards.
Arriving later? Wat Arun floodlit from the river is a good second best. You see it from a dinner boat, from the cafes on the Tha Tien bank, or from the rooftop at the end of the midnight food tour.

What if you land late or leave very early?
Late arrivals: eat near the hotel and walk a night market. Very early departures: book the Airport Rail Link's first trains or a car, and stay near the line.
If you land after 9 p.m., the tours have left. Eat near your hotel, or take a taxi to Yaowarat, where some stalls cook until midnight or later. The trains stop around midnight, so plan on a taxi or app car back.
An odd one for jet-lagged travellers: Pak Khlong Talat, the flower market, is open 24 hours and busiest before dawn, when the flowers arrive. If you are awake at 3 a.m. anyway, that is the time to see it.
For an early flight, the Airport Rail Link starts at 5.30 a.m. Stay at Phaya Thai or Makkasan and you are one train from the terminal.
Start around 6 p.m. and finish in Chinatown: the flower market, Wat Prayoon lit up and dessert, two to a tuk tuk.
Book thisHow do you fit a night tour around a flight?
Leave a buffer of a few hours, leave your bags at the hotel, and use the free cancellation if the flight slips.
The tours on our shortlist, apart from the Muay Thai ticket, cancel free up to 24 hours before, which covers a cancelled flight known a day ahead, not a delay on the day. Book a tour that starts at least two or three hours after your scheduled landing.
Do not bring luggage. The White Orchid cruise and the Michelin tuk tuk tour do not allow large bags, and nobody wants a suitcase on a tuk tuk. Dinner cruises do not wait for latecomers, so a cruise is the riskiest choice on a tight arrival; a tour that meets at a metro exit is the most forgiving.
What should you skip with one night?
The Grand Palace after mid-afternoon, a cross-town night market, and a non-refundable Muay Thai ticket on a day with a tight flight.
Skip anything that eats an hour in traffic for a short visit. The bigger night markets are further out, and the round trip can take longer than the market. Asiatique, with its shuttle boat from Sathorn pier, is the exception.
Skip the Muay Thai on a one-night stop unless your flight is certain: the Rajadamnern ticket is non-refundable and the date cannot be changed. And skip the urge to see everything. One good evening in Chinatown or on the river is a better memory than three rushed stops. If you come back with more nights, the things to do at night guide has the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Is one night in Bangkok enough?
Enough for one good evening: street food, the flower market and a lit temple, or a dinner cruise. Not enough for the Grand Palace and the temples inside, which need a day.
What is the best area to stay in Bangkok for first-timers?
Silom or Sukhumvit, near a BTS or MRT station. Both have food and nightlife on the doorstep and fast trains to Chinatown, the river and the Airport Rail Link.
Do I need a visa for one night in Bangkok?
Many nationalities can enter visa-free; from 15 September 2026 that stay is 30 days for 60 countries. Everyone needs the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Check your own nationality before you fly.
Is there a night tour that drops you back at your hotel?
Yes: the midnight food tour lists a drop-off at your hotel in central Bangkok. It finishes just before midnight.
