Chao Phraya dinner cruise: which boat?

Every dinner boat on the Chao Phraya sells the same view: the Grand Palace and Wat Arun lit up from the water. What differs is the pier, the drinks, the show and who can get on board. Here is how the three we list stack up.

A Bangkok dinner cruise is a simple format: you board at a riverside pier around 7.30 to 8 p.m., eat from a buffet while a band or dancers perform, and the boat sails up past the old town and back. It lasts two to two and a half hours. You see the big temples floodlit from outside, which is how you see them after dark anyway.

We compare three listings: the luxury Chao Phraya dinner cruise, the White Orchid cruise with free-flow beer, and the Super Galaxy cruise from ICONSIAM, a boat launched in May 2026. All the details below come from each listing; other boats on the river may differ.

The quick answer

Pick the luxury cruise for an 8 to 10 p.m. sailing with Thai dance, your own table and wheelchair access. Pick the White Orchid if you want free-flow beer, a cabaret and a disco, and a choice of three piers. Pick the Super Galaxy for the newest boat and a longer sailing, 8 to 10.30 p.m. from ICONSIAM. Arrive early: the boats do not wait.

What is a Chao Phraya dinner cruise?

Two to two and a half hours on a multi-deck boat with a buffet dinner, live entertainment and the floodlit riverside, usually from about 8 p.m.

The boats are big, with three decks: air-conditioned dining rooms below and an open deck on top. The buffet is a mix of Thai and international dishes, seafood included. The show is a mix too: classical Thai dance on all three boats here, plus a live band, and a cabaret on two of them.

What you are really paying for is the river at night. From the top deck you pass the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the illuminated bridges. It is a sit-down evening, with no walking beyond the pier, which makes it the easy choice for older travellers, families and anyone tired after a long day of temples.

Which Chao Phraya dinner cruise should you book?

The luxury cruise for accessibility and a calmer evening, the White Orchid for beer and a party, the Super Galaxy for the newest boat and the longest sailing.

Here are the three side by side, from their listings.

Our pick for most couples and families is the luxury cruise: a fixed table, a quieter show and the one listing here marked wheelchair accessible. Groups who want a drink should take the White Orchid, the one of the three with beer included; the cabaret performers pose for photos afterwards, and the listing says a small tip is customary. The Super Galaxy gives you half an hour more on the water and a brand-new boat, with no track record yet beyond its first season.

Which pier do the dinner cruises leave from?

ICONSIAM, Asiatique and River City are the main ones. Check the pier on your booking confirmation, then add time for traffic.

ICONSIAM is the riverside mall on the Thonburi bank; the Super Galaxy boards at Pier 4, and the White Orchid offers it as one option. The BTS Gold Line stops at the mall. Asiatique The Riverfront is further south on the east bank, with a free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier, next to BTS Saphan Taksin. River City Bangkok, the arts and antiques mall, sits on the east bank north of Sathorn. The luxury cruise's boarding point depends on the option you book, so read it on the booking page.

Then leave early. The luxury cruise lists a latest check-in of 7.50 p.m. and suggests arriving by 7 p.m. The Super Galaxy asks for at least 30 minutes before departure, with check-in closing at 8 p.m. The White Orchid listing is blunt: the boat will not wait for latecomers, with no refund and no new date. Rush-hour traffic in Bangkok can double a taxi ride, and the river shuttle or the BTS is the safer bet.

What do you see from a dinner cruise?

The Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the riverside temples floodlit, the Rama VIII Bridge, the big riverside hotels and malls, seen from the water.

The routes overlap. The luxury cruise usually passes under Memorial Bridge to Wat Arun. The White Orchid lists ICONSIAM, the National Museum of Royal Barges, Wat Arun, the Grand Palace, the Rama VIII Bridge and Asiatique. The Super Galaxy adds Wat Pho, Thammasat University, Santa Cruz Church and the Mandarin Oriental.

You do not step ashore. The temples close in the late afternoon (Wat Arun around 5.30 to 6 p.m., per Tourism Thailand), and from the boat you see them lit. Wat Arun is the moment people wait for: sit on the side facing the Thonburi bank on the way up, or move to the open deck as the boat turns.

What food and drinks are included?

A buffet on all three. Beer is included on the White Orchid; on the other two, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee are included and alcohol costs extra.

The luxury cruise lists more than thirty dishes, with seafood, salmon sashimi and beef steak, and a vegetarian set menu on request at no charge. Alcohol is on sale on board. The Super Galaxy buffet runs to seafood, salmon sushi, teppanyaki, Thai dishes and desserts; drinks from the menu are extra, and you arrange a vegetarian meal by messaging the operator after booking. The White Orchid has a Thai and international buffet with vegetarian options, a welcome drink and an open bar with beer. It does not allow you to bring your own alcohol.

Bars and boats in Thailand serve alcohol to people aged 20 and over. On a Buddhist holy day, alcohol sales stop for 24 hours outside licensed venues; the alcohol sale hours post has the 2026 rules.

Where should you sit: rooftop or inside?

On the top deck if it is dry. On the luxury cruise, book the rooftop when you book the cruise; on the White Orchid, get there early.

The luxury cruise's rooftop deck is narrower than the decks below, which the operator says gives clearer views of both banks, and holds about 200 to 250 guests. Rooftop seats must be booked in advance. Guests seated indoors on the first and second floors, behind floor-to-ceiling windows, can go up to the rooftop any time.

The Super Galaxy assigns tables after booking, not by boarding order, so arriving first does not get you a better seat. The White Orchid is general admission, with a 360-degree open-air deck: there, the early arrivals get the rail.

The open deck. On the luxury boat, these seats are reserved ahead.

What happens if it rains or the river is high?

The cruises still sail. Open-deck guests move inside. High water or river events can change the route, and the listings say so.

Rain is a fact of life from mid-May to mid-October. The luxury cruise keeps backup tables indoors and hands out umbrellas; the Super Galaxy moves open-air guests inside and sails on. When the river runs high, the luxury boat may skip Memorial Bridge, and the White Orchid warns that its itinerary can change with water levels, with no refund in that case.

In late 2026 there is a bigger event. The Royal Barge Procession sails to Wat Arun on 6 November 2026, with full-dress rehearsals on 21 and 28 October from about 2.30 p.m., according to Tourism Thailand. Operators may change routes or times around those dates, so check with yours. The Royal Barge post has the viewing spots.

Free-flow beer, a cabaret and a disco on the river, from Asiatique, ICONSIAM or River City.

Is a dinner cruise worth it, or should you eat on land?

Worth it if you want to sit down and see the lit temples in comfort. If the food is the point, Chinatown beats any buffet.

A cruise is the most relaxed of Bangkok's night formats. You get a table, a show and the best view of Wat Arun after dark, with no tuk tuk and no walking. For a group with mixed ages, or someone who walks with difficulty, it is the obvious choice.

Food lovers will be happier on land. A buffet on a boat is a buffet; a Chinatown food walk takes you to stalls that have cooked one dish for decades. If you can only do one, read the tuk tuk or food tour guide first. If you have two nights, do both: the river one evening, Yaowarat the next.
